Community Radio Awards Launched with Exciting Changes in Categories and Eligibility

Martin Steers | Monday 27th March 2023 4:00pm

One of the most significant changes this year is the change to the eligibility criteria.

To cater to the changing nature of community radio and the growth of SSDAB and other Ofcom licenced stations, the awards are now open to 'Ofcom licensed and broadcasting radio station[s], operated by a not for profit or charitable entity with a remit to serve a community of location or a locally based community of interest' which by default should include all historic Ofcom Licenced Community Radio Stations and the new C-DSP stations.

Any other stations that feel they meet the new criteria are encouraged to contact the awards team for confirmation.

They've also changed a few of the categories - removed a few, and added a couple, including a specialist content category to showcase programming that provides a platform for great content that may not get recognised in other areas.

The awards will be releasing full details of all the categories in April with a brand new website.

Chair of the awards, Martin Steers said: “We've listened to feedback over the years and always tweaked and changed the awards, we had a great response to our recent feedback and development process and wanted to change the eligibility to be responsive to the changes in the industry and enable more stations to enter.”

The organisers are also calling for community radio stations to bid for the opportunity to host the awards ceremony and the UK Community Radio Networks national community radio conference. The awards ceremony is a chance for the community radio sector to come together and celebrate the achievements of the year, and the conference is a change to showcase best practice within the sector and bring managers and station volunteers together to network and work together.

“We love bringing the awards to different parts of the country, and the awards ceremony has grown year on year, and most recently the partnership with the UKCRN holding the event after their national community radio conference has worked really well the past few years, we're looking to work with stations who have their local contracts and insight to bring the awards and conference to more places.”

Full details of the awards will be launched in April, this years entry submission period will open on May 19th and run until June 30th.

Details of the bidding process to host the awards can be found on the UK Community Radio Network website www.ukcrn.radio/conference
